Tips For Small Businesses – Keeping Up With Digital
Digitally conservative companies risk being left behind. This is not a warning, but a fact the BDC has discovered after studying thousands of businesses. These businesses with a conservative digital culture have seen their sales plummet up to 25% over the last few years.
So you’re a small business owner, and you have so much to do, with so little time. There are mountains of technology articles and the speed at which tech changes, makes your head spin. How do you keep up? Here are some quick tips to get you started:
Small Biz Digital Components
- Mobile-friendly website
- Up-to-date web content
- Accurate Google listing
- Social media output
Having a mobile-friendly website is critical in this day and age. Most searches for products or store locations start on a mobile phone. ComScore revealed, when looking at each country’s desktop users and mobile users separately, mobile users universally consume more digital minutes per person – and almost double that of desktop minutes in Canada.

Up-to-date web content is ideal for any size of business, but nothing is more frustrating for a customer than showing up to a business just to find out the products/services on the website are completely inaccurate. Be sure to review your web content every few months and make sure you note any changes or inaccuracies. Even if you hire someone to update your website, spot-check their work. I personally have seen businesses with the wrong address (map) and even email! on their contact page.
The same can be noted about Google listings. It is imperative to have accurate store hours and location details. Make sure any changes in hours to your business is reflected on your Google listing, as this is where many people check for that info. It is also important to keep a master list of password and login credentials so you can easily do updates.
Finally, make sure you are participating on social media. Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIN, etc., nothing looks worse than a dusty social media page that hasn’t been updated in over a year. Try to get in the regular habit – ie. a certain day(s) of the week – of posting content.
